Duomo di Milano

Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nascente, is one of the most famous buildings in Europe. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world. It is literally at the center od the Milan, streets radiate from the cathedral or circle it.

The construction of the cathedral was commissioned by bishop Antonio da Saluzzo in 1385. The works of the cathedral started in 1386 under the reign of Galeazzo Visconti, he supported the creation of the world's largest church by giving access to his marble quarries, granting tax exemptions and inviting architects from across Europe. Work proceeded for generations and when the cathedral was consecrated in 1418, construction fo the nave had only just started. Construction would continue until 1813, and final finishes were applied as late as in 1965.
The cathedral is entirely made of Condoglian pink-hued white marble, to bring it from the quarries, canals were dug leading to the construction site. The famous navigli are canals left over from that network. Thousands of artists, sculptors and specialized workers were involved in the construction of the Duomo of Milan. It is said that its 135 gargoyles are a reminder of the many hands that helped create Milan Duomo.
