The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

When going to visit Pisa, you should go to the Cathedral Square, in italian named Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracles Square). There you will certainly spot tourists posing for the same photo trying to support with their strength the Cathedral's bell tower.

The so-called Leaning Tower is one of the most famous buildings in the world thanks to its unintended tilt. It is made with white marble, has 8 storeys and its is height is about 56 metres.
The construction on the Tower began in 1173, but there always have been controversy about the identity of the architect, the design could be attributed to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano or to Diotisalvi.
The tilt was noticed when the construction reached only the third storey. Before serious attempts could be made to correct it, war broke out between the Italian city-states. The building was halted for over a century, this break allowed the foundations to settle. Without it the tower would have probably collapsed!
The tower was finally completed in the late 14th century, but no one managed to avoid its progressive sinking.
At its worst, in the late 20th century, the lean reached 5.5 degrees (about 15 feet, 4,5 metres). Extensive work was subsequently done to straighten the tower, the lean was reduced to 4 degrees.
