Glera

Glera

Name: Glera original name was Prosecco. In 2009 Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene was promoted to DOCG, the highest level of Italian wine quality. Furthermore was established that the name Prosecco should be reserved only for wine produced in the area between Verona and Trieste (northeastern part of Italy). This decision was made to protect Prosecco wine from the many imitations widely diffused. Following this measure the grape variety changed its name to Glera.

Origin: Glera was already cultivated in roman times in Veneto and Friuli region, where is located the Prosecco town. It is believed that Prosecco originated in this town.
Where is cultivated: the whole cultivation of Glera is almost concentrated in Italy.
