The Riace Warriors

The Riace Warriors

The Riace warriors are two bronze statues realized around Vcentury BC. The statues are named in an informal way "the young" and "the old"

but from a scientifical point of view they should be called respectively Polynices and Eteocles. Who are they? According to some ancient works they are two characters of the "Teban cycle", sons of Oedipus and Jocasta, who in order to obtain supreme power in Thebes, duelled against each other and killed each other.
Apart form the myth, many studies have been conduted to identify the two bronzes. They certainly were realized in Argos, in the Peloponnese, by the same artist and they represent two warriors a hoplite, "the young", an armed foot-soldier in ancient Greek, and a warrior king, "the old".
They arrived in Italy around I century BC, when sacked by the romans and taken to Rome. Under Constantine the great they had to be transferred to Costantinople, tho new capital of the Empire, to embellish it. During the journey the ship lost his cargo in the Roman harbour of Caulonia, that's why the bronzes were retrieved along the coast of Calabria, in 1972. Today you can admire the Riace Bronzes at the National Archeological Museum of Reggio Calabria.
