Baroque Lecce

Baroque Lecce

Lecce is the baroque masterpiece of southern Italy, it is also described as the Florence of the South.

It is situated in the region of Puglia, the heel of Italy's boot.
This city is rich of artistic beauty, you can still see ruins of a Roman theatre and amphithteatre, and in the 17th century it become the center for the ornate architecture called Barocco Leccese, made with the white soft limestone named after the city, Pietra Leccese (litterally Lecce stone). As the baroque style requires these building are characterized by decorations and cherubs extravagantly covering facades and doorways. The historic center is compact and perfect for a walk between churches and baroque monuments. Apart from the city don't miss the surroundings of Lecce and the astonishing coast of its province.
