Valdichiana

Valdichiana

The Valdichiana, a broad natural amphitheatre enclosed between the Sienese mountains and Lake Trasimene, is the southernmost valley of the province of Arezzo. The Etruscans inhabited the valley for several centuries, leaving extraordinary evidence in the city of Cortona. The collections displayed in the “Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca” and in the city of Cortona are, along with the tombs, part of an Archeological Park, much of which can already be visited.

In the town of Castiglion Fiorentino, the “Museo Civico Archeologico” contains Etruscan artefacts originating from the recent excavations in the area of the Cassero. A district marked by the power struggles between Perugia, Arezzo and Florence, in the sixteenth century the Valdichiana came under the power of the Medici. The churches and museums of the mediaeval towns such as Castiglion Fiorentino, Civitella in Val di Chiana and Cortona contain masterpieces of art, such as the Annunciation by Beato Angelico which can be seen in the “Museo Diocesano” in Cortona. A village that is unique of its kind is Lucignano, set out on a characteristic elliptical plan, with roads and lanes which meet at the top, in front of the most important church, the Collegiata, again with a circular parvis in front of it. Foiano della Chiana, with its Renaissance buildings, is home to one of the oldest Carnivals in Italy. Great artists were born in the Valdichiana: in Cortona, Luca Signorelli, Pietro Berrettini known as Pietro da Cortona and Gino Severini. Monte San Savino, with its elegant Renaissance architecture, was the birthplace of one the great sculptors of the period, Andrea Contucci known as Sansovino.
The Val di Chiana is also the homeland of the famous Chianina breed of cattle known for its meat and in particular for his loin, from which you will get an excellent steak alla Fiorentina.
